Pelvic organ prolapse

A feeling of pressure or discomfort in the pelvic area may be related to pelvic organ prolapse. We’ll examine you and recommend care based on the extent of your symptoms and what suits you.

Prolapse can cause pressure or a sensation of something foreign in the vagina. Sometimes you can feel a bulge; at other times, problems with urination or bowel movements appear as well. Symptoms may be more noticeable after standing for a long time or toward the end of the day.

A side-view diagram of four pelvic floor states: normal position of the organs and descent of the bladder, the rectum and the uterus
A — normal position of the organs, B — descent of the bladder, C — descent of the rectum, D — descent of the uterus.

The examination shows which parts of the pelvic floor need support. Depending on the extent of the findings and your needs, physiotherapy or a pessary, a device inserted into the vagina, may help. If we are considering surgery, we’ll discuss the available procedures, the expected result and the risk of the symptoms returning. A finding of prolapse alone does not mean that surgery is necessary.
