Urogynecology
Recurrent urinary tract infections
Repeated burning and urges to urinate can be exhausting, especially when the problems keep coming back after intercourse.
First, we check whether it really is a bacterial infection and, depending on the situation, test your urine, including a urine culture. Similar symptoms can also have other causes.
The next steps depend on the results, the course of your symptoms and your health. They may include changes to your habits, local estrogen after menopause for some women, or preventive treatment. If we’re considering antibiotic prophylaxis, we’ll discuss its benefits, side effects and the risk of bacterial resistance. Neither the specific medication nor the dosage is the same for every woman.
We assess other preventive options, such as treatment instilled into the bladder, on an individual basis. Their availability and the strength of evidence for their effect may vary. If you have a fever, chills, pain in your side or your general condition worsens, seek medical help quickly.
